ROME -- A Friendship Tournament, which took place in Rome with the aim of helping refugees and asylum seekers, was organised by ACLI and CONI Lazio and took place in the city’s Olympic Stadium was the support of the Rome 2024 bid committee.

The tournament took place on Wednesday and was attended by CONI President Giovanni Malagò, the Rome 2024 General Coordinator Diana Bianchedi, and International Relations and Planning Manager Simone Perillo, among others.

Of the event Bianchedi said, “Today’s event, with young people from all over the world, is an extraordinary example of the key messages behind the Rome 2024 bid and reminds us of the incredible power of sports to unite people.”

Malagò added, “I’m extremely happy to be here, this event proves that sports can bring people together in a special way and make everyone part of the same team without differences.”

The bid committee provided the teams with jerseys and caps to show their full support of the event.  Teams were from Guinea, Gambia, Syria, Pakistan, Senegal, Kenya, and Nigeria.

CONI Lazio President Riccardo Viola was also present at the event and commented, “Offering the less fortunate the opportunity to enjoy themselves through sports, an event like this is a true sign of solidarity and welcome.  I hope that this day, which has been spent in the iconic setting of the Olympic Stadium, will be, in the minds of these people, a memorable moment of sport and brotherhood.”
