Sant'Egidio's appeal to Romans to show solidarity with homeless

Cold weather has made the matter of the homeless all the more pressing

ROME - Yesterday, the death of a homeless Romanian in an isolated area of the city; today, the birth of a baby girl, born to a young woman just a few steps from St. Peter's Square. This news is a alarm bell regarding the quality of life in Rome and requires everyone to not remain indifferent or distracted from those who are forced to face the winter without any shelter.

It is for this reason that the Community of Sant'Egidio is appealing to the authorities to intensify further protection initiatives and welcome the homeless, but also to the Romans because, during the Jubilee of Mercy, special attention is shown to those who live in extreme poverty, personally intervening with acts of solidarity, which can save a life, and promptly reporting critical situations to the Social Control Room and associations that help the homeless.

In these days of extreme cold, the Community of Sant'Egidio is promoting its extraordinary collections of winter clothing (for information call 06/8992234 or visit www.santegidio.org). Moreover, thanks to a great mobilisation of volunteers throughout the city, the Community of Sant’Egidio is strengthening its presence in the defence of the homeless, with the distribution of hot drinks, blankets and sleeping bags, especially to the most isolated.
