Piazza della Repubblica, where the tragedy took place

ROME — An Australian tourist is in a critical condition at the Policlinico Umberto I hospital, having crashed through the window of a hotel overlooking the Piazza della Repubblica.

The incident happened Sunday afternoon, when the 36-year old tourist, who was visiting Rome with his wife, jumped through the window of his room on the fifth floor of the hotel, crashing onto the second floor terrace. His wife was in the room asleep at the time.

According to investigators, the tourist and his wife were drunk and they had had an argument shortly before the fall.
