Survey reveals that poor economy is affecting expats in Italy

Italy has been ranked 58th out of 64 countries for expats

ROME — The survey “Expat Insider 2015”, carried out by InterNations has revealed that the poor economy is affecting foreign residents living in Italy.

In the survey filled out by more than 14,000 respondents, whilst Ecuador topped this year’s list of best places to live abroad, Italy ranked 58th out of 64 countries worldwide.

The results for Italy are particularly poor in categories such as personal finance and woking abroad, where Italy comes in 61st and 62nd place, respectively. In addition, 62 percent of the respondents stated that the Italian economy was poor. However, the worldwide percentage of expats with an unfavourable view of their respective country’s economy is only 21 percent.

Regarding working abroad, fewer than four in ten respondents are content with their career prospects, and 40 percent of expats in Italy expressed concerns about their job security, twice the global average.

As a result of the poor economy, personal finances are also suffering, with one in three respondents saying that their household income is not sufficient for daily life.

However, Italy did not score poorly across the board. It ranks 32nd in quality of life, and 85 percent are content with the climate. Furthermore, more than half the expats are not put off by the language, finding it relatively easy to learn.

The Italian population is also considered generally friendly by 75 percent of the respondents, which helps the expats to acclimatise to Italian culture: two-thirds feel at home in Italy.

InterNations is the largest global network and information site for people who live and work abroad. It also offers approximately 4,000 monthly events and activities for expatriates to meet one another, and offers online services such as country and city guides, and discussion forums.
