Juventus in Champions League final following Madrid triumph

Former Real Madrid man Alvaro Morata scored the decisive goal

ROME – Juventus wrote a new chapter in the footballing history books on Wednesday night, beating Real Madrid 3-2 on aggregate to advance to their first Champions League final in 12 years. The Bianconeri will face Barcelona in the culmination of the world’s premier club competition in Berlin on June 6.

Juventus were always going to be underdogs heading to the Santiago Bernabeu, even in spite of their 2-1 advantage from the first leg. However a superb performance saw the Italian champions earn a deserved 1-1 draw on the night, which was enough to see them qualify.

The Old Lady started the game in a positive fashion, never allowing Madrid to establish a stronghold in the game. When the breakthrough came for the home side on 23 minutes it was courtesy of a contentious penalty decision. Chiellini clearly made contact with James’ leg, however Juventus fans were left feeling hard done by, as it appeared the Colombian was already on his way down.

Cristiano Ronaldo made no mistake with the spot kick, sending Buffon the wrong way to score his 77th Champions League goal and draw level with Lionel Messi in that particular battle.

The goal gave the home side a new lease of life and there were chances for Ronaldo, Bale and Benzema before the break however the Juventus defence stood firm. After the interval, the Italians began to grow into the game and gained a reward for their efforts on 57 minutes. Pogba used his strength and power to nod a header down into the box, and the former Real Madrid man, Alvaro Morata, pounced to send a left footed shot into the back of the net.

Despite a couple of late chances for under-fire Welshman Gareth Bale and a dangerous long distance strike from James Rodriguez, the Bianconeri defence were never put under great pressure in the final half hour and as the referee blew his whistle, Juventus’ fans could celebrate a return to the promised land.

Manager Massimiliano Allegri was full of praise for his side, which has now knocked out Borussia Dortmund, AS Monaco and Real Madrid on the road to the final.

"It is an extraordinary result, to eliminate Real Madrid,” said Allegri to Mediaset. “This team has overcome lots of hurdles. It is not easy to play at the Bernabeu but the boys played with great concentration and for this they deserve praise. I think it's important for our football to have an Italian team in the Champions League final."

Juventus are in the unprecedented position of having two finals to look forward to as on Wednesday they face Lazio in the Coppa Italia final, having already wrapped up their fourth successive Serie A title.
