English poet at Keats-Shelley House
ROME- Poet and playwright John Challis was to give a reading of his work at the Keats-Shelley House on Thursday at 5pm.
Born in London in 1984, Challis is currently studying towards a PhD in Creative Writing at Newcastle University, composing his thesis on the influence of film noir upon contemporary poetry. In 2012, the writer was awarded a Northern Promise Award from New Writing North to help develop his first collection of poetry and, since then, his work has been featured in a number of publications and, most recently, on BBC Radio 4 programme The Echo Chamber. His debut play, The Next Train to Depart, premiered in January 2014 and was performed at several venues across the North East of England. The writer also runs Newcastle-based literary events company Trashed Organ.
The performance will involve a selection of Challis’ published work in addition to poetry written during his period of residence at the Keats-Shelley House.
