Concordia captain handed 16 year prison term

GROSSETO -- A panel of judges Wednesday found ex Costa Concordia captain Francesco Schettino guilty for the shipwreck of the pleasure liner and sentenced him to 16 years and one month in prison.

Prosecutors had asked for a 26 year sentence for Schettino for the shipwreck in which 32 passengers lost their lives when the Concordia hit rocks off Tuscany in 2012 when a navigation stunt went wrong and the skipper fled on a lifeboat to save his own skin as his charges drowned.
