Sistine Chapel rented for private event

VATICAN CITY – For the first time in the history of Michelangelo’s famous chapel Pope Francis has permitted a private company, Porsche, to rent the space.

The money raised by the event will be donated by the Church to charities for the poor and homeless. The fee Porsche have paid for the chapel is undisclosed, but is expected to have been a significant amount.

This landmark decision falls in line with the pontiff’s pledge that “the treasures of the Vatican must be used to do good.” In the past, concerts in the Sistine Chapel have only been held for private church audiences. This choice could open the door for other companies to follow suit.

The event, on Saturday, will consist of a performance of Rossini’s ‘Coro di Santa Cecilia’, with singers accompanied by two pianofortes, as in the composer’s original composition. The concert will be directed by Ciro Visco and will be followed by a gala dinner within the Vatican museums.

Only 38 paying guests will be in attendance. Notable in his absence will be the Pope himself, who declined an invitation due to his work commitments for the Church synod on the family, which concludes on Sunday.
