Afghani migrants rescued from suffocation

VENEZIA – Two 16-year-old Afghani immigrants were saved Monday from the lorry container they had hidden themselves in, narrowly avoiding asphyxiation.

The Bulgarian lorry was sealed for refrigeration, and by the time the boys were discovered the oxygen levels in the container were dangerously low.

They were rescued by chance as the lorry stopped at a service station in the Mestre area of Venice, where a woman filling her car with petrol happened to hear the boys banging from the inside of the lorry.

She rang police and then managed to find the two drivers who were eating inside the roadside restaurant, who opened the container to make the discovery.
