More 'No TAV' activists arrested

ROME – Milan and Turin police have arrested three youths between the ages of 24 and 26 who allegedly took part in an anarchic group that attacked police forces at the TAV construction site in Chiomonte, police said.

The accusations against the three are of possession of war weapons, violence against civil forces  and damages to the construction site for the TAV, the Turin-Lyon high-speed railway.

Sources said the youths are also being accused of terrorism. Their arrest follows that of other four activists who are already undergoing trial in Turin.

The events for which the boys have been indicted are considered a direct attack against the construction of the TAV in the area of Chiomonte. According to the police report, at least 30 persons were involved in the anarchic attack.

All wearing black hoodies, they broke into the fences and entered the perimeter of the construction site with the intent of destroying the place. The police intervention forced them to hide in the woods that surround the area.

Earlier this month, the No TAV movement posted on social networks their intent to make this “another important summer of fighting.” The activists who opposed to the construction of the high-speed train railway are said to be planning a three-day national camp in Turin to discuss the issues around the railway and decide on their next steps.

In the meantime, the digging work for the creation of the railway tunnel in Chiomonte is six months ahead of schedule, according to comments made by infrastructure minister Maurizio Lupi. The idea is to be done by the end of 2015, despite No TAV demonstrations and attacks.
