Bruised Azzurri prepare for new battle

ROME-After a disappointing 2-1 loss to a surprisingly well equipped Costa Rican side, Italy are struggling to prepare for their must win final group match against Uruguay on Tuesday, which will see the winning side through to the top 16.

Mentally and physically, the two teams are in completely different states: whilst Uruguay are buzzing after their 2-1 victory over England on Thursday night, which saw the English side eliminated from the competition, the Azzurri are feeling drained after their shocking 1-0 loss to Costa Rica on Friday.

Coach Cesare Prandelli remains upbeat: “We must regain our energy. With this match either you’re in or you’re out and I’m hoping to see an Italy with a different approach.”

The match is set to take place at the Estádio das Dunas in Natal at 1pm local time, which means Italy may struggle under the unbearable weather conditions.

Coach Prandelli is contemplating adapting his current formation that has five midfielders and Mario Balotelli isolated in attack, to having Ciro Immobile join the forward line resulting in two strikers.

With defensive player Daniele de Rossi injured due to a calf muscle strain, Prandelli will also alter the defensive structure and opt to have a three-man formation with Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli.

Italian captain Gianluigi Buffon seems anxious about Italy’s final group game: “This is the 10th tournament I have played with Italy and in all 10 only once, in last year’s Confederations Cup, were we already qualified by the third match. Instead, we have to carry the Costa Rica loss as baggage and that could make it tougher”.
