Dozens arrested in blitz on "fake invalids"

Naples-Around 30 people including a Naples police officer have been charged with obtaining disability pensions fraudulently in a crackdown on fake invalids, police said Thursday.

The Carabinieri of Naples' St. Giuseppi barracks have placed around 30 people under house arrest during the blitz which took place at dawn. Among those arrested was an elderly woman who claimed to have a serious sight deficit but who was caught casually reading the post and parking the car in a tight alleyway in Naples.

In addition to the woman with ‘severe sight problems’ among the arrested are many who have "non-existent pathologies," including the investigation of a police officer that has been arrested for similar offenses in the past.

The investigation has revealed that a number of disability reports by ASL local health authorities, which have been presented in various offices in Naples, are in fact false enabling healthy people to bilk pensions since as long ago as 2008.
