18 arrested in anti-mafia raid

NAPLES-The Flying Squads of Caserta and Florence have arrested 18 people believed by DDA anti-mafia investigators in Naples to have infiltrated the Casalesi clan of the Camorra mafia.

Among the 18 arrested, two police officers, Franco Caputo, 56 from Naples, and Cosimo Campagna, 57 working for the Italian premier office have been indicted.

The two state police agents allegedly breached confidentiality codes of investigations by aiding the revelation of a secret linked to the Casalesi clan, whilst also leaking restricted information to politicians, businessmen and other employees of public offices.

According to investigators the arrests are linked to ex Italian minister Claudio Scajola, arrested last week on the suspicion of aiding the escape of Amedeo Matacena from Italian justice, who was convicted for mafia association.

Investigators suspect that someone in the office provided Mr. Scajola with classified information on the criminal investigations by illegally accessing the database to monitor police progress.
