ROME - A Syrian man who set himself on fire just steps away from the Colosseum is in serious condition Friday, hospital officials have said.
The 24-year-old man had doused himself with lighter fluid and set himself on fire in front of a crowd of horrified tourists. Police immediately responded to the situation and extinguished the flames.
The man is reported to be of Syrian descent but holds a Swedish passport. He was taken to the Sant'Eugenio hospital in Rome and is in serious condition, being treated for third-degree burns on his face, chest, and arms.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the self-immolation.
