Letta: Peace in the Middle East is our objective

US Secretary of State John Kerry meets with Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta at Palazzo Chigi
ROME - Ahead of a meeting with the US Secretary of State John Kerry Wednesday morning, Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta has said that "peace in the Middle East is our common objective."

The Italian Prime Minister met with Secretary Kerry and Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino in Rome Wednesday morning to discuss the situation of the Middle East. The three officials discussed a number of topics ranging from Iran, to Syria, to Libya.

After the meeting, Secretary Kerry is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to discuss Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. The meeting is expected to last seven hours.

On Tuesday night, Prime Minister Letta met with his Israeli counterpart for a similar discussion. Prime Minister Netanyahu urged Italy to continue to impose sanctions against Iran, stating that "we must ensure that Iran won't have nuclear weapons capabilities." The Italian Prime Minister responded that meeting in the "city of peace" was a great stage for the discussions.
