Shots fired at Palazzo Chigi

ROME– A gunman fired shots at Palazzo Chigi, the office of Prime Minister Enrico Letta, Sunday, wounding two Carabinieri paramilitary police and a passer by as Italy's new Government was sworn in.

Carabinieri returned fire at the man, identified as Luigi, Preiti, from Calabria, aged 47, who tried to flee after firing his pistol at the officers, but was arrested and wounded in a scuffle with security forces. Anna Maria Canceliieri, the new justice minister, said the gunman “appeared to be unbalanced” though the man’s family said he has no history of mental illness.
