Sit-in organised by ‘Truth and Justice for Giulio Regeni’

ROME – A sit-in has been organised for 11 a.m. on Friday in front of the Egyptian embassy by the “Truth and Justice for Giulio Regeni” international campaign group who strive for justice for Regeni, who was murdered in Cairo in 2016.

Regeni, the Italian Cambridge University graduate, was kidnapped and tortured to death during a research trip to Egypt in 2016.

The brutal murder sparked international outrage, as Amnesty International launched the ‘Truth for Giulio Regeni’ campaign across the globe.

The names Sabir Tariq, Usham Helmi, Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim and Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif will be repeated aloud outside the embassy. These are the names of the four men accused of murdering Regeni who have decided not to turn up to the trial.

“This will make it clear that their absence at trial is a deliberate act to prevent Giulio Regeni from receiving justice,” said the campaign group.

The same initiative will be held simultaneously in front of the Egyptian consulate in Milan.
