ROME- Alfonso Tumbarello, the doctor who had been treating the former Cosa Nostra boss Matteo Messina Denaro has been arrested for fraudulent misrepresentation and aiding a super fugitive. The arrest comes after an investigation was launched, intending to uncover the network of co-conspirers who had been aiding the fugitive, quickly after Messina Denaros’ arrest a few weeks ago. 

 Campobello is currently in jail, after having knowingly treated and personally visited the fugitive for years, having prescribed him at least 137 medications and therapy, according to police reports. He had also conspired with Andrea Bonafede, the man who had lent Denaro his identity.  Bonafede was getting treatment simultaneously with Denaro from Tumbarello and collected the drugs on Denaro’s behalf, he has since also been placed under arrest.

 Tumbarello had in recent weeks been hiding from the public eye after he was put under investigation, with sources close to Tumbarello saying he had “disappeared from circulation.”

 Until yesterday, when Carabinierie Del Ros and soldiers arrived at his home in Campobello di Mazara, the small town in the province of Trapani, to inform him that the investigating judge Alfredo Montalto has signed a precautionary measure to arrest him. 

 The investigators attempting to uncover the extensive network of co-conspirers who have been aiding the super fugitive in recent years have reported that the investigations have caused a “deafening silence” in the community of Campobella di Mazara. The silence has been an obstacle in the investigation and indicates that the community is interlaced with different levels of co-conspirers and complacency, whether out of fear or even complicity. The community had shielded and harbored a man who had been wanted worldwide and granted him the protection to seek medical treatment, and surgical interventions and enjoy great wealth, apartments, cars, and even romantic relationships.
