Cospito, the anarchist on hunger strike risks death to escape maximum security prison

ROME- Alfredo Cospito, an anarchist facing a life sentence on a terrorist charge in the Bincali prison in Sassari after a series of attempted violent crimes, continues his 100-day hunger strike.

Cospito started the hunger strike months ago to protest against the judge’s decision to place him in maximum security. This decision comes due to Cospito’s ability to radicalize and spread his violent message even from within the prison and instigate possible revolts.

His condition has severely deteriorated because of the three-month hunger strike and his doctor Millia has now declared that in order to save him “it would not be necessary to transfer him to another place. The only solution would be to remove it from 41 bis.” The anarchist has reportedly lost over half his body weight in three months and has officially become underweight which has severe health implications for the muscles, organs, and nervous system, including the risk of cardiac arrest. In case of cardiac arrest, his doctor says “If he goes into ventricular fibrillation with cardiac arrest, he is revived, but then what? Even moving it to another structure, where it can be operated more quickly, would change little.” Furthermore, the chance of survival would be low as his body is extremely fragile, meaning Cospito is officially at risk to die.

Despite the extreme conditions, Delmastro who is a Member of the Chamber of Deputies of Italy maintains that Cospito poses far too big a threat, further saying: "These very serious facts demonstrate that whoever decided to inflict harsh prison on Cospito had seen it right in still considering him a leader, a strong reference for a vast anarchist team considered dangerous - he says - The State does not retreat, can't do it. Evidently, Cospito's behavior in prison manages to influence a network of violent terrorists. And this is one of the prerequisites for 41 bis.” Delmastro’s harsh decision comes after various other terrorist anarchist organizations had launched attacks against various institutions including Italian embassies in support of Cospito.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonia Tajani, and The president emeritus of the Consulta and Minister of Justice in the Prodi government, Giovanni Maria Flick take the same position as Delmastro in deeming Cospito too big a threat and that the state of Italy should not flinch in the face of violent anarchists. Flick even quotes the Chief Justice of Israel saying “The State can and must defend itself with one hand tied behind its back but, in the strictest respect and firmness of legality, with the other hand it must use all the tools at its disposal”. The state has however agreed to bring forward his hearing date which had been originally set for the 20th of April to March 7th because according to his doctor within the next three months, the anarchist will surely be dead.
