Racist thugs attack Morocco fans with chains and clubs

A chain-wielding aggressor

VERONA – In a racist incident, Morocco fans in Veneto celebrating their national football team’s unprecedented World Cup victory over Spain were attacked by thugs wielding chains and batons, 13 of whom were detained, police said.

Vehicles sporting Moroccan flags were violently assaulted by members of extreme right-wing citizen cells when trying to drive through a roundabout in central Verona on Tuesday evening. The assailants used chains and batons to smash car windows, leaving one woman with minor injuries. Four vehicles were damaged in the attacks. As a result, police took 13 people in for questioning who were later released.

In amateur footage incident uploaded to social media showing one of the incidents, a group men charge at the cameraman’s vehicle which was flying a Moroccan flag out of the window. As the car accelerates past, the man leading the aggressors can be seen swinging a chain at the windscreen.

Those held by police were detained in Piazza Bra, near the central thoroughfare of Corso Porta Nuova.  There were numerous calls to emergency services on Tuesday evening about a gang of roughly 15 youths dressed in black with their faces covered who were trying to approach the area in which Moroccan fans were celebrating. The Verona Police force said in a statement that the incident “involved 13 youths, all of whom were recognised by DIGOS agents as militants in the city’s extreme right-wing groups.”
