Milan advance to round of 16 with win over Salzburg

Olivier Giroud celebrates with AC Milan teammates

MILAN – AC Milan beat RB Salzburg 4 – 0 and progressed to the round of 16 in the Champions League. The result from Wednesday night means that three of the four Italian teams in the competition, Milan, Inter and Napoli, have advanced, while Juventus were knocked out.

French striker Olivier Giroud opened the scoring at the San Siro stadium with a free header from a corner in the 14th minute. The 36 year-old would prove crucial to the Rossoneri’s win, as he went on to set up Bosnian Rade Krunić’s goal at the beginning of the second half, before scoring again himself in the 57th minute. In stoppage time, Giroud also assisted Brazilian midfielder Junior Messias’s winning goal.

AC Milan finished the group stage in second place, behind Chelsea, who had beaten the Italian side home and away.

Inter Milan had secured their progression to the knockout stage the week before, having thrashed Czech club Viktoria Plzeň 4 – 0 at the San Siro on Oct. 26.

Napoli came top of their group, having won every game but their last against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday.
