GRAN SASSO – A 28-year-old man is being treated in intensive care after falling into a coma after being struck by lightning while climbing in the Apennines mountains, Il Fatto Quotidiano have reported.

The man, who has been named as Simone Toni, suffered a cardiac arrest and significant burns, before being taken to San Salvatore hospital in L’Aquila where he is currently being treated.

The incident is reported to have taken place when an electrical storm broke out on Sunday night while he was climbing down the Gran Sasso together with two other companion.

The storm apparently caught the trio by surprise and took place a short distance away from their Campo Imperatore hotel.

Emergency services were dispatched including a helicopter to help transport Toni to hospital where doctors believe the situation is serious but that he is likely to make a recovery.

His two companions were not injured.
