Tourist attacked after refusing man's advances

The 21-year-old man has been sentenced to eight months

ROME – A Norwegian female tourist was attacked on Saturday evening in Campo de Fiori after rejecting a 21-year-old man’s advances on her and was left unconscious on the ground with a fractured nose, local authorities said.

At 11:30 p.m. on via dei Giubbonari, a 20-year-old Norwegian woman was violently assaulted by a man after she refused his advances and was taken to the S.Spirito hospital where doctors said the injuries sustained would need 30 days healing time, as well as an operation.

Her friends testified: "He is a friend of ours, she has only known him for a few days. Shortly before we left, he joined our group." He was a friend of the other young woman's boyfriend and had joined to share their trip to Italy with them. He was also Norwegian and of Iraqi descent. The victim's friends also provided Carabinieri with a photo of the attacker. Images from CCTV cameras in the area were used to reconstruct the events.

Police were able to track down the 21-year-old closeby the scene and he was later sentenced to eight months in prison. In the courtroom on Monday morning, he admitted to having “pushed her to the ground and kicked her” after they left the club.
