MILAN - Former AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko joins the Integration Heroes mission to help Ukrainian families escaping the war-torn country.

The former football player from Ukraine has joined forces with the Municipality of Milan on an initiative to help integrate Ukrainian child refugees into the Italian school system and support their education.

To this end, Shevchenko has set up the toll-free number 020205, where Ukrainian parents will receive information to orient their children in their new reality.

The Integration Heroes match, organized by African soccer legend Samuel Eto’o with the support of the Serie A, will be played on May 23 at the Meazza San Siro stadium in Milan. It will be a symbolic game against any form of discrimination.

“I immediately felt the closeness of Samuel and this project. We share our intentions for a world free from discrimination and, in a moment like this, I can only make myself available to my Ukraine and lend a hand to those on the run and living in terror. This is why I decided to set up this number and try to give many families a semblance of normality, in such a dramatic and difficult situation,” Shevchenko said.

The initiative will enable the children to start Italian language lessons. There will be also the possibility of creating a virtual channel to organize classes in DAD to resume the education started in Ukraine.

The Integration Heroes match will be transmitted in national and international media, and will feature some of the greatest current and former football champions. Among them Júlio César, Javier Zanetti, Francesco Totti, Paulo Dybala, Andrea Pirlo, Filippo Inzaghi, Wesley Sneijder and Eto’o’s teammate in many triumphs at Barcelona, Lionel Messi.
