Santa the Christmas criminal arrested in Rome

ROME – A 45-year-old man has been accused of at least five armed robberies in pharmacies and tobacconists across the city while dressed as Father Christmas, police said.

The man threatened at least five shop owners in Santa Claus garb with a loaded pistol before stealing the proceeds. The incidents took place between Ponte Milvio and Trionfale.

After reports of a rogue ‘Babbo Natale’ on the run, police dispatched officers to locate the robber.

The man, who comes from Novi Ligure but has not been identified, has been arrested in the past for a drug-related crime. According to investigators he moved from one area to another using a car sharing service.

Police found him in possession of stolen money and the loaded gun. Additionally, more than 1.2 kilos of hashish were found in his house, divided into blocks. He was stopped on Dec. 13 by the Carabinieri after attempting robbery in the Corso Francia area.

Investigations are underway to clarify whether he is responsible for other similar incidents that have occurred in the capital.
