Lampedusa refugee centre capacity exceeded after latest migrant arrivals

 AGRIGENTO – During the night a further 119 migrants arrived on Lampedusa, bringing the number of refugees in the centre to 370, substantially above its intended capacity, the coast guard said.

 The large number of displaced people arrived on three different boats between Wednesday night and Thursday early morning.

 The first boat was six metres long and held 29 people, including four women, from Sudan, Somalia and Guinea.

 The second boat was slightly larger at seven metres and intercepted 37 miles from Lampedusa’s shore by the Coast Guard. On it were 36 migrants, all men bar one woman, from Senegal, Sudan, Mali, Ethiopia, Egypt, Gambia, Libya and Algeria.

 The third boat measured nine metres and held 54 migrants, including two women and a minor, from Mali, Guinea, Senegal, Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Algeria.

 The migrant centre on Lampedusa is intended to host 250 people maximum.
