Ibrahimovic sees red in Serie A weekend of few surprises

Sergej Milinković-Savić (third from right) heads home the winner for Lazio

ROME -  The latest weekend of Serie A fixtures saw victories for all the top teams, and no changes in the standings of the top seven.

Lazio’s victory, however, was a very close affair, beating Verona 1-0 with the goal only coming in the 92nd minute. Lazio are currently battling for sixth place - and the possibility of European football next season - with their neighbours Roma, however, Lazio have a game in hand and are currently one point ahead of their rivals.

Lazio, who were dominant throughout the match, did in fact score in the 47th minute, but it was disallowed, with the goalscorer Felipe Caicedo ruled to have swung his elbow in the face of a defender - instead earning himself a yellow card.

The goal finally came from a lofted cross from Romania’s Stefan Radu onto the head of the Serbian Sergej Milinković-Savić, who managed to rise above the defenders to head it home.

Elsewhere on Sunday, fourth place Atalanta beat Fiorentina 3-2. Colombia Duvan Zapata opened the scoring with two goals in the first half, giving the away side a healthy lead, which they squandered however, with Fiorentina managing to bring it level by the 66th minute, both goals scored by Dusan Vlahovic.

Atalanta managed to retake the lead just a few minutes later, with a penalty converted by  Josip Ilicic, earned from an unlucky handball by Lucas Martínez Quarta in the area.

AC Milan on Saturday managed a 3-1 victory over 19th place Parma, despite having only ten men for the last half an hour. The away side put in a dominant performance in the first half, going into the break 2-0 up thanks to Ante Rebic and Franck Kessie, but were much less impressive in the second half - being under heavy pressure for much of it, having 27 percent of the possession and five shots at goal, compared to Parma’s 12.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent off in the 60th minute for arguing with the ref, though he was nowhere near the ref at the time. Though the arguments had clearly gone on for some time he insisted that he said nothing disrespectful or offensive.

Parma used their man advantage and scored just six minutes later, through Riccardo Gagliolo, though a Rafael Lead goal in the 94th minute restored Milan’s two goal lead.

Roma’s 1-0 victory over Bologna came from a 44th minute goal by Borja Mayoral, and top of the table Inter also could only manage a 1-0 victory over 18th place Cagliari, the only goal coming in the 77th minute, scored by Matteo Darmian.
