Bells ring through Venice to celebrate city's 1600 years

St Mark's Square, Venice

VENICE - To celebrate 1600 years since the city's founding, a chorus of bells rang out at 4 p.m. on Thursday to pay tribute to the city.

The ringing of bells from Saint Mark's Cathedral to the Duomo in Mestre, from San Girolamo to Torcello, San Rocco, San Giacometto and San Giorgio, marked the start of the celebrations that will last until the Venice Serenissima in 2022.
