 ROME --  Italy surprisingly put up a sly fight in the negotiations leading up to the ratification of the Paris climate deal Tuesday by the European Parliament, environmental sources said Wednesday.

 The Italian government has always claimed to play a leading role in the green economy and in the use of renewable energy sources -- however in the negotiations that preceded the ratification of the 2016 Paris climate agreement at the European Parliament Tuesday, two countries in particular went against the popular current -- Poland and, surprisingly, Italy.

 REGGIO CALABRIA -- The Calabrian mafia ‘ndrangheta boss, Antonio Pelle, was found in a bunker underneath his house and caught Wednesday, police said.

 Antonio Pelle, aged 54, also known as Vancheddu and la Mamma, the mafia boss of the San Luca mob, was arrested by Reggio Calabria’s police, ‘Il Fatto Quotidiano’ reports.

 He had been at large since 2011 when he escaped from Locri Hospital, with his name in the 100 most wanted list -- about to be made one of the first 10. He now faces 20 years of imprisonment.

 SASSARI -- The results of a study involving the Desertification Research Centre of this Sardinian city’s university show that desertification and drought can be fought by managing groundwater.

 The artificial recharge of aquifers as a solution to save water in arid countries at risk of desertification, making it available for agriculture and other uses, is a technique that was developed through Wadis-Mar (Water harvesting and Agricultural techniques in Dry lands: an Integrated and Sustainable model in the Maghreb Regions).

 ROME -- ADN Kronos, one of Italy’s leading news agencies with a tradition of innovation, has just fired three administrative staff due to its recent financial difficulty, posing difficult questions about the agency’s future, the Associazione della Stampa Romana journalists' union said Wednesday.

 The news agency has fired three administrative staff, taken as a hint by journalists that other similar measures could follow, after recent questions raised about the handing over of ownership of the agency and potential merging together with others.

NAPLES - Millions of fans awoke yesterday to the news that one of the most in vogue writers at the moment finally had a real name.

 “I admit it, I’m Elena Ferrante” -- the world could read through the twitter account @AnitaRajaStarn Wednesday morning. Translator Anita Raja from e/o Editors, declared she was indeed the person behind the pseudonym Elena Ferrante of the tetralogy “The Neapolitan Novels.”

 Hours later, the microblog suspended the account claiming it was a fake and Ferrante’s publisher denied the verity of the tweets.
