CATANIA – A Sicilian mafia clan plotted the assassination of journalist, Paolo Borrometi, in order to halt his interfering investigations into their activities, a judge said on Tuesday. Following a series of death threats addressed to Borrometi, Italian police managed to intercept a conversation in which clan members vented an urgent need to take out the journalist.

 NAPLES – Student Giada de Filippo threw herself off the roof of the university complex of Monte Sant’Angelo during the graduation ceremony at Federico II University on Monday, university authorities said.

 The 26-year-old from the province of Isernia took her own life as the ceremony was underway in Naples. The student had told her family and friends that she was due to graduate, however, in reality she hadn’t yet completed her degree and all the necessary exams.

ROME – An earthquake in central Italy, reaching 4.6 in magnitude, has reawakened fears of the three tremors in August and October 2016, which ripped through Lazio, Umbria and Marche, taking 299 lives. This time several buildings were damaged but nobody was hurt.

 The quake’s focal point shook the town of Muccia, near Macerata, where well over half the 920 inhabitants are still lodged in temporary accommodation. Only 120 people remain in their original homes, unscathed from the 2016 earthquakes, whilst 550 continue in their wait for permanent housing.

ROME – A conceptual music composition of the American musician and composer John Heineman will be presented on April 24 at Tor Vergata University, Rome.

 It will form part of the Springtime Study Concert, directed by Giorgio Nottoli and Giovanni Costantini, which celebrates INAD 2018 (International Noise Awareness Day).

His father, Francesco Vinci, remains severely injured whilst the Carabinieri follow indications of the 'Ndrangheta’s involvement in the blast.

 I had a fleeting acquaintance with the Costa Smeralda (the Emerald Cost), the playground of millionaires, and also with the islands of the Maddalena, the archipelago a little further north, which seem stepping stones towards Corsica.

 I had even spent some time on San Pietro island off the west coast and witnessed the slaughter of tuna in nearby waters which attracts sadistic tourists.
