ROME – The latest in a series of terror raids across Italy saw police round up several people linked to the network of Anis Amri, the Tunisian man responsible for the 2016 attack on a Christmas market in Berlin that left 12 people dead and 56 injured.

 Police have detained five people in the capital and Latina as part of the “Mosaic” investigation. They are accused of crimes related to the training and planning of international terror attacks, including the supply of false documents to illegal immigrants in Italy.

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis was due to celebrate Maundy Thursday by visiting the Regina Coeli prison in Rome in the afternoon, symbolically washing the feet of inmates.

 During his time as archbishop in Buenos Aires, the future pontiff began to spend Maundy Thursday in the places of greatest suffering in the city, a tradition he has brought with him to the role of pontiff.

 At the previous three celebrations, Francis has also chosen prisons, visiting Casal del Marmo, Rebibbia and Paliano.

TURIN – An arrest in Turin has thwarted the imminent risk of an alleged ISIS militant “poised to attack”. Matteo Salvini has since called for an “immediate halt” to migrant landings in Italy as the incident comes as the second terrorist-related arrest in the last two days.

 Elmahdi Halili, an Italo-Moroccan, was seized earlier today following an investigation by anti-terrorism police in Turin. Police interference arrives after an Italo-Egyptian teacher was arrested in Foggia yesterday facing charges for attempts to instil hostile jihadist sentiment amongst pupils.

ROME – Rome’s council has begun using convicts from prisons to help tackle the capital’s dilapidated parks and roads, in a unique experiment that will be extended to other parts of the country in the coming months.

 The project had its first outing by the Colosseum on Tuesday, with a handful of convicts from the Rebibbia and Regina Coeli prisons collecting rubbish in the local area under the supervision of guards.

 LEGHORN – An explosion at this Tuscan port killed two workers on Wednesday afternoon with a third believed to be in a critical condition, police said. Fire brigades and emergency services were said to be attending the scene, firefighters said.

 Shortly before 2 p.m. a loud bang was heard in various areas of the city. It was the result of an explosion from one of the tankers at the Neri company’s coastal depot in Livorno, with speculation that it may have been caused by a build-up of gas in the cistern.

ROME – Italy came from behind to grab a 1-1 draw against England as the Azzurri finally found the back of the net, but the winless streak continues. A VAR decision gifted Lorenzo Insigne the chance to cancel out Jamie Vardy’s opener.

 This certainly wasn’t a creative masterclass from either side; nor was it a lesson in cultured defence. In fact, most clear-cut chances were presented from a lapse in concentration or careless defensive errors.

ROME – Relations between the Five Star Movement and the right-wing coalition had turned sour on Wednesday morning after a bruising day of rhetoric appeared to set plans for a new government back considerably.

 Matteo Salvini weighed in on the claims of Five Star’s leader, Luigi Di Maio, with the latter insisting on Tuesday that only he could become prime minister in Italy’s next government.

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis has accepted John McAreavey’s decision to resign from his position as Bishop of Dromore, following a request submitted at the beginning of the month. Former Bishop of Raphoe, Philip Boyce, has stepped in to act as an administrator for the role in Norther Ireland.

 Pressure had intensified on the pontiff to come to a decision after a television programme revealed the Bishop’s attempts to conceal the case of Fr Malachy Finnegan, accused by 12 people of sexual abuse, and whose funeral McAreavey celebrated in 2002.
