ROME – The annual cricket showdown between Commonwealth embassies based in the Eternal City has returned, courtesy of the Commonwealth Club of Rome and the Italian Cricket Federation.

 The tournament originated in the 1960s and 70s, and was originally known as the ‘Rome Ashes’, with teams from the British and Australian embassies taking on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the FAO and a few international colleges in Rome.

LAKE GARDA – A week-long exploration of an American amphibious craft that sunk during the Second World War is due to be carried out at Riva del Garda. A team from ProMare, a non-profit underwater archaeology foundation, led by founders Brett Phaneuf and Fredrik Soreide will conduct the investigation, which will take place from Sep. 28 to Oct. 5. A three-man mini submarine will be used to descend to the depth of the sunken craft. The goal of the operation is to conduct a full survey of the sunken vehicle and locate any associated objects, such as traces of the soldiers.

ROME – Ivan Gazidis, chief executive of Arsenal Football Club has resigned from his role to take up a position with the Milan outfit, Arsenal have confirmed.

 In a statement on the club’s official website – www.arsenal.com –, the London team has announced the promotion of two current staff to higher managerial positions, as chief executive Gazidis departs to join AC Milan as CEO.

GENOA – Italy’s fiscal police has raided the offices of the Milan Polytechnic and engineering company Cesi Spa, official sources said on Tuesday.

 Cesi Spa undertook a study of the state of the Morandi bridge in 2016. Police are investigating emails between Cesi’s marketing manager Chiara Murano and Autostrade official Filippo Valeri. Valeri allegedly asked Murano for the 2016 study. The marketing manager said that the causes of the tragedy could be linked to “vices to the ordinary project”.

ROME - Six people have been arrested in Operation Anaconda – a police investigation targeting corruption in Ater Roma’s allocation of housing and commercial premises, police sources said on Tuesday.

 Among the accusations levelled at the Roman institute, which manages social housing, are corruption for acts contrary to official duties and unauthorized access to the information system.

 Those under house arrest include an Ater official and employee along with an employee of the Municipality of Rome.

VITERBO – A disabled contestant in the Miss Italia beauty contest has hit back at cyber bullies who have described her as “disgusting”.

“You’re disgusting, go back home and don’t make the Italians pity you because you are crippled,” wrote one woman about 18-year-old Chiara Bordi, according to Il Fatto Quotidiano.

 The teenager from Tarquinia, Viterbo retaliated in a post on her Instagram profile, “I am very sorry for her because I may be missing a foot, but she is missing a brain and heart.”

ROME - A Cristiano Ronaldo double fired Juventus to a 2-1 win over Sassuolo, but Douglas Costa stole all the headlines, as a spit caught on TV saw him sent off late into injury time. Massimiliano Allegri, Juventus manager, indicated his disappointment with the Brazilian in his post-match press conference, stating that “these things should not take place”, and promising that Costa would be punished for his actions.

ROME – Doctors were monitoring the health of Italian screen diva Gina Lollobrigida after an incident at home, hospital sources said on Monday.

 The incident only came to light because the popular actress, 91, was due to appear on yesterday’s episode of national television chat show Domenica in

 La Lollo started bleeding from the nose before her appearance and as a precaution decided to go to San'Eugenio hospital in Rome's south.
