ROME – A witness overheard a member of the Egyptian secret service admit that they had taken, beaten and killed Giulo Regeni, the Cambridge PhD student tortured to death in 2017, according to the Corriere della Sera

 The individual, who happened to speak Arabic, was present at an informal meeting of African police in 2017 when he overheard what could prove a key step forward in the ongoing investigation.

ROME - Atalanta came from behind to beat Lazio away from home and capitalise on points dropped by their closest rivals to move three points clear in fourth place and one step closer towards Champions League football next season.

 Atalanta went into the match off the back of an electric recent run of form. A 2-1 win away at second-placed Napoli before comfortably beating Udinese at home had seen the Bergamo outfit move into the Champions League spots as rivals faltered.

Rome – The Quirinal palace is to host a new exhibition entitled The art of saving art in the halls of Palazzine Gregoriana from May 5 to July 14.  Curated by Professor Francesco Buranelli, the exhibition will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, a specialized department of the Carabinieri Corps established on May 3, 1969, to combat crimes against the historic Italian artistic heritage.

NAPLES – A four-year old girl remains in critical condition after surgery, having been struck by a bullet in a Camorra raid earlier this week.

 In a statement released by the Santobono Hospital, the girl’s condition was described as “extremely serious” after she underwent major surgery Saturday night to remove a projectile which had passed through both of her lungs.

 She is suffering from “severe respiratory failure resulting from damage to her lungs,” according to the hospital. She is currently in a medically induced coma on life support machine.

MILAN – Investigators considering whether Silvio Berlusconi bribed witnesses in his notorious sex trial have found proof of hush money which went indirectly to Ruby 'Rubacuori', or Ruby Heartstealer. 

 The inquiry formally requested evidence from Switzerland. It unearthed payments which went from Berlusconi via a Swiss bank to Luca Risso, the ex-partner of Ruby, who now lives in Mexico.

 The new documents show three transfers, which total around 400,000 euros, from Pkb Privatbank in Lugano to Playa del Carmen in Mexico.

VITERBO – Friends of the two CasaPound members accused of rape may be liable to charges of aiding and abetting if they deleted a video of the crime, according to investigations by Il Fatto Quotidiano.

 Videos and photos of the rape of 36-year old woman were shared on a Whatsapp group of the Blocco Studentesco, the youth branch of the neofascist group CasaPound.

 When it became clear that the crime was being investigated by the police, there were attempts to get all members of the group to delete the videos and then the entire “conversation” itself.

MANTUA – A helicopter has crashed in an industrial area of Pegognaga killing the pilot, according to initial reports.

 The pilot has been named as 38-year old Alessandro Foglio Bonacina, a financial manager at Cellular Italia who rented the helicopter that morning to complete aerial surveys. He was killed on impact, around 11:30 Friday morning.

 The cause of the accident is not yet established, but there may have been a fault which caused the propeller to be blocked, reported Il Fatto Quotidiano.

ROME – The World Food Programme (WFP) has halted distribution worldwide of a fortified blended food from one of its suppliers to test whether it is related to outbreaks of illness in East Africa.

 According to medical centres and hospital records, 3 people died and 293 were admitted to health centres in the Karamoja region of Northeast Uganda in March and April after eating Super Cereal. The product is used by WFP and partners to prevent malnutrition, especially among women and children.

ROME - The United Nations Refugee Agency has unveiled Rothko in Lampedusa, a new cultural project that aims to promote the artistic talent of refugees and shed light on the current migration crisis, which will open in Venice this month.

 Set to run from May 11 to November 24, Rothko in Lampedusa will exhibit the works of eight established artists, amongst which Ai Weiwei, for whom migration and displacement are either a personal experience or an artistic focus.
