ROME – The renowned writer Andrea Camilleri died Wednesday morning aged 93 after a month on life-support at the Santo Spirito, according to hospital sources. The author of the popular detective books based around Sicilian detective Inspector Montalbano, Mr Camilleri suffered a heart-attack on June 17.

ROME – A 12-hour siege has led to the eviction of 78 families from a former school in the Primavalle district in Rome’s northwestern outskirts, police sources said on Tuesday.

 Since 2003, the school had become a home for 300 Italians and migrants including 80 children. Targeted by the Interior Ministry because the structure is considered “unsafe,” the area was surrounded by dozens of agents and armored vehicles during the night.

“We counted 45 trucks,” says one of the occupants.

ROME – A man who threw himself into the Trevi Fountain Monday dressed as a senator from Ancient Rome, wanted to capture the attention of Matteo Salvini, police sources said.

 The 38-year-old Italian citizen entered the waters of the world famous Baroque masterpiece at around 7 pm, shouting he wanted to stage a demonstration in favour of Campanian retailers, victims of the Camorra, and asked to speak with Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.

TRENTO – A young brown bear which was captured Sunday has re-escaped, climbing to freedom over a four and a half metre fence electrified at 7,000 volts. As the hunt for the predator continues, the M5S Environment Minister and environmental groups hit back at the suggestion by Trentino governor Maurizio Fugatti that the animal should be killed if it approaches human land, according to Il Fatto Quotidiano.

ROME – Italy has the highest number of young people who do not work or study (NEET), and despite an improvement it remains below the EU average for those awarded a diploma or a degree, according to new figures released by the Italian National Institute for Statistics (ISTAT).

 Women are better educated than men on average, according to the new “Levels of education and work outcomes” report. But this is not reflected in wider society as the female employment rate remains below that for men.

ROME – Weapons belonging to far-right groups in cities across the north of Italy have been seized by police in their latest anti-terrorism crackdown. Three arrests were made, including of a former customs officer who once stood as a candidate for Forza Nuova, according to Il Messaggero.

 The impressive arsenal included an air-to-air missile (AAM), a type of projectile usually fired from one aircraft at another, as well as modern assault rifles, pistols and ammunition.

VENICE – A gondola sank Sunday amid choppy waters in La Serenissima, causing alarm amongst those who saw the incident. But the gondolier, who was alone on the traditional Venetian craft at the time, was rescued by a passing boat, reported La Repubblica.

 The gondola, which belongs to Remiera Francescana, had already capsized and was submerged by the time its driver was rescued from the water between Bacini and the Island of Vignole.
