BERGAMO – Data released by 91 of the 243 municipalities of Bergamo province indicates that up to 25.9 per cent of the total population of Bergamo are likely to be infected with coronavirus, according to an investigation reported in L’Eco di Bergamo. Only 2,060 of the 5,400 people to have died in Bergamo province in the month of March had COVID-19 down as the official cause of death, but with the death toll in March 2020 six times higher than that of March 2019, it is thought that thousands upon thousands of coronavirus cases are unrecorded.

ROME – With the contagion rate flattening but the number of dead continuing to grow, the Head of the Italian Civil Protection Agency, Angelo Borrelli, revealed on Thursday that he thinks Italians will have to stay home until at least May 1, although the Italian Deputy Economic Minister, Antonio Misiani, commented that “we are not in a position to give dates for the reopening of production,” as both public figures spoke to Italian radio stations.

ROME – An earthquake late in the night struck the north of Rome, with the epicentre between Marcellina and San Polo dei Cavalieri, and with a magnitude of 3.0, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Ingv).

  The shock, which occurred at 2:12 a.m on Friday morning, was mostly felt in the north-eastern areas of Rome, spanning Tivoli, Monterotondo, Guidonia, Mentana, and Castel Madama, although the shock was felt as far away as Civitavecchia as well, reports Il Messaggero.

DAKAR – More than five million people face severe food insecurity in the Central Sahel region of Africa, as the humanitarian crisis in the region escalates with the coming of coronavirus, according to a new joint food security report by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and partners. In the Central Sahel, a region which includes Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, the number of hungry people has risen steadily as the crisis worsens, pushing over one million people in Mali, and two million people in Niger, into severe food insecurity.

ROME – To stimulate the production of masks in Italy, regulations managing their production have been radically reduced as manufactures are unable to meet the growing demand, with three million masks a day being consumed in Italy, according to the Head of the Civil Protection Agency, Angelo Borrelli. With hospitals and pharmacies emptied of protective equipment, a self-certification process has been set up in an attempt to increase production.

ROME – The hashtag #nosciacalli went viral during the week against unscrupulous lawyers who have taken advantage of the coronavirus crisis by filing against healthcare workers, with one such example being ‘AP Compensation and Consultancy’, who have allegedly advertised their legal services so as to induce people to expect compensation claims, reported the Bari Bar Association via a Facebook post on Monday.

MADRID – According to new analysis by Professor Nuno Fernandes, Professor of Finance at the 'Business School University of Navarra' (IESE) and research associate of the 'European Corporate Governance Institute', Italy's GDP in 2020 is expected to fall by at least 3 per cent due to the coronavirus crisis and more than 10 per cent if the halt in economic activity lasts until July, as “a global recession is almost inevitable,” as quoted in an IESE press release.

LONDON – Luca Di Nicola, an Italian citizen living in London, died on March 24, age 19, making him the youngest Italian to have died from coronavirus, with reports indicating that his death could have been prevented with earlier diagnosis. Di Nicola’s aunt spoke to La Repubblica, and said that although "they called the ambulance, revived him, his lungs collapsed, full of water and blood,” as quoted in La Repubblica. Althought they incubated him in intensive care, he died half an hour later, at around 7:00 p.m.

 ROME –  Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza has said quarantine restrictions in force in the peninsula will be extended to April 13 despite the country having hit a peak with the infection rate down to 4 percent and fewer people in intensive care. The head of the Higher Institute for Health Silvio Brusaferro said the country must exercise caution as deaths were still high with 837 more people dying Monday while there were 4053 new cases taking the total to 77,635 in all.
