PALERMO – Giuseppe Paternò, at the age of 96, has graduated with a degree in Philosophy and History from the University of Palermo.  

 “My enthusiasm has always been great. This is my antidote for the passing years.” reflected Paternò, who has become the oldest person in the world to graduate for the first time.

 Having started working for his father at the age of 7, and then working in the railway service for over 40 years, Paternò decided to enrol at university three years ago.

 ROME -- The leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, has lashed out after the Senate voted for a trial into the dealings over the Open Arms migrant ship.   

 The charges are the kidnapping of persons and rejection of the duty of office for Salvini’s refusal, in 2019 when he was Interior Minister, to allow a Spanish ship, with migrants on board, to land on Italian shores.

VATICAN CITY -- A report from an American company, Recorded Future, alleges that Chinese hackers have breached the networks of the Holy See.

 Recorded Future, a private company that investigates cyber-attacks in the US, says that a Chinese group of hackers, RedDelta, have forged documents to gain access, as reported in the New York Times.

ROME -- The Pentagon has announced a plan to withdraw troops from Germany, two battalions and a squadron of F16s may be transferred to Italy, in a statement reported by La Repubblica. 

 The American President is unhappy with the contributions of Germany to NATO and believes they should therefore not benefit from America’s defence resources.

 Mark Esper, United States Secretary of Defense, announced plans for nearly 12,000 troops to leave Germany of which 5,600 will be redeployed to various European countries, among them Italy.

ROME -- The Catholic social group, the Community of Sant’Egidio, have organized a solidarity campaign for Roman prisons, including watermelon feasts for prisoners. 

 As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, prisoners faced increased isolation and less contact with the outside world. The Community of Sant’Egidio have therefore arranged a watermelon feast for prisoners on Sunday, 30 July, from 11:30 in Regina Coeli prison. Two more watermelon eating events will be held at other prisons in Rome in August.
