  ROME - The Community of Sant’Egidio in Rome on Wednesday will take part in the day of remembrance for the 76th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birknenau.

  Birkenau was the death camp at Auschwitz and saw the murder of over a million Jews. It was liberated by allied forces on the Jan. 27, 1945.

  The community of Sant’Egidio have released a statement in which they spoke of the prevalence of antisemitism and nationalism throughout Europe, calling for education of the youth.

  BRESCIA - Carlo Mosca, a doctor at a hosptical in Brescia has been accused of giving lethal doses of drugs to the ill in order to free beds for Covid patients. Mosca, 47, chief of the emergency room at the Montichiari hospital, is being accused of killing two Covid patients, though the prosecution has claimed he killed four in total, with other cases also under investigation.

  PULA - The environmental associations Greenpeace and Cova Contra have begun investigations into an oil spill in the Adriatic Sea, after satellite imagery and data was released by the European Space Agency (ESA) showing oil in areas of the sea between Italy and Croatia.

  The spill was caused by the sinking of the oil rig Ivana D on Dec. 5. During a storm at sea, the platform, already nearing the end of its life and being prepared for either disposal or maintenance, sustained heavy damage and sunk to a depth of over 40m.

  ROME - If Rome and Lazio return to the yellow zone in the next few days, museums could be reopened, even if it would be in effect only a reopening for residents and the local public. Current provisions detail that it is not possible to move between different regions except for reasons of necessity or  to reach your second home. It will be an opportunity to ensure a visit in complete calm and without the slightest crowd, to look at the glass half full.

  ROME - On the fifth anniversary, on Monday, of the fatal abduction of the Italian graduate Giulio Regeni, the Italian President Sergio Mattarella has said that “we are still waiting for a full and adequate response from the Egyptian authorities.”

  Regeni, from Fiumicello, was in Egypt doing research for his PhD at Cambridge University when he was kidnapped and tortured to death, finally found on Feb. 3, 2016, mutilated in a ditch off the Cairo-Alexandria Highway. He was allegedly suspected of being a spy, for his PhD research into Egyptian trade unions.

  AUGUSTA – The Ocean Viking, a rescue ship operated by the European maritime rescue organisation SOS MEDITERRANEE, on Monday landed 373 rescued migrants into the port in Augusta, Sicily, having received approval from Italian port authorities.

  Crew members welcomed the announcement with relief as weather conditions have been deteriorating significantly over the past 48 hours, making the situation onboard very difficult to sustain for survivors and the crew.

  MILAN - Live opera is returning to La Scala, fully staged, for the first time since last February when theatres were shut for the first lockdown.

  It is reopening with two productions, the first, Così Fan Tutte, will be revival of Michael Hempe’s historic 1982 production, reprised by director Lorenza Cantini, and will be available to live stream on Saturday on Raiplay, the RaiCultura website and on the theatre’s own website.
